OKUN Beachwear Brand and Product Launch

A new era in men’s swimwear is upon us as African-inspired luxury brand ÒKUN launches its effortlessly vibrant debut collection. Founded by Bola Marquis, ÒKUN produces beautifully made swimshorts, beachwear and accessories inspired by the designs, culture and heritage of countries from across the African continent to deliver products crafted for a global audience.

ÒKUN uses premium, soft-to-touch swimwear material, bold prints and rich colours to capture the traditional African aesthetic in a fresh and contemporary way.

ÒKUN, Yoruba for ‘The Ocean’ is a new and innovative brand that is truly explorative, not only in its artistic vision, but also in its concept, with the brands ethos representing the spirit of Pan-Africa, ÒKUN is devoted to reflecting African heritage, collaborating with emerging African creatives and partnering with ethical fashion initiatives that provide education, employment or skills enhancement. ÒKUN is also working toward a ‘MADE IN AFRICA’ goal of producing the majority of its products on the continent with a proportion of online sales going towards educational foundations.

Through the use of exuberant tones and stunning patterns, ÒKUN successfully exemplifies the balance between heritage and contemporary, premium and functional, presenting a well-made and well-designed line of excitingly fresh beachwear that represents all that is great and grand about African style.

Presently OKUN Beachwear SS14 Collection is showing at PITTI UOMO in Florence, Italy but we attended their launch party and Press event recently which showcased the SS13 “Independence” collection. This is now available to buy at the fantastic Wolf and Badger, Notting Hill.

News we are excited about is that their totes & bags are ethically made in Africa in partnership with EFI the Ethical Fashion Institute, a UN initiative changing the way that international fashion business works.

Launch Collection SS13 “Independence”

In  the  spirit of communicating a positive vibe through vibrant print, ÒKUN’s confident and self-assured Spring/Summer 13 ‘Independence’ collection, draws retro-esque influence from the 60’s and 70’s, while also feeding into African heritage, with Congolese Kuba and Ghanaian Adinkra motifs beautifully worked into the designs.

The two signature men’s styles  are inspired by iconic figures. Ali, the boxers style trunk takes inspiration from the infamous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ fight in the former country of Zaire (now Democratic  Republic of the Congo). Cut inches above the knee, and with an elasticated waistband for ease and added movement, the Ali comes  in  six vibrant prints.

The Congolese influence continues with the Patrice short (named for the iconic first president Lumumba) and inspired by the uniquely stylish group of gentlemen ‘Sapeurs’ from the same country. This signature mid-length short features elements of menswear tailoring (button fasteners, side adjusters) and with its considered cut, is an all day style that can be easily worn away from the beach or pool. Patrice is available in six prints and three block colours.

We were also delighted to attend the launch and thoroughly enjoyed the catwalk show the presentation and the networking. A great event with great product!

The SS13 Collection will be available to buy this spring at Wolf & Badger Notting Hill, Goods Copenhagen, Temple-Muse Lagos and the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Puerto-Rico As well as online at

And news just in is that African-inspired luxury beachwear brand Okun has teamed up with London based footwear company MULO to create a limited edition line for SS13. Combining the vibrancy of African print with  MULO’s distinctive silhouette, the collaboration is a slip on summer shoe that is practical, comfortable and full of character.

Currently available in 3 bold African prints, the shoes are made using high quality British waxed cotton, cushioned insoles and are lined with vegetable tanned leather from Italy. This exciting collaboration has summer and style at its heart and these shoes are a unique addition to any gentleman’s wardrobe this summer.
