Did I ever tell you the story of how Actress Rosario Dawson and her business partner spoke at one of my Fashion Africa Conferences I host annually in London?
We initially connected on twitter – a platform where i have over 14000 followers
She had liked commented on my tweet
I responded back and sent a DM
I requested to interview her regarding her relatively new business Studio One Eighty Nine set up with her business partner Abrima Erwiah.
We had our interview in 2 stages. The first time I wore a onesie. The second time she wore hers lol
It was winter. I lived in Germany at the time and it was cold there at winter. We used Skype. We recorded the voice notes and I took a few sneaky pics but I won’t ever share those 🙂
The interview was posted on my blog site www.africafashionguide.com – received 1000+ likes in a matter of days. Subsequently the website crashed and all the likes disappeared… GUTTED!
BUT even better than that… it led to me inviting her to speak at our conference at our conference with her business partner and they both agreed.
Did I have the money to fly them over and pay speaker fees?
NO
But they came and gave their time to a small business owner.
I remain totally appreciative of their time and support at the time.
To be honest I wasn’t sure until it happened if it would have happen.
I probably could have invited more press and had loads more followers but sometimes… I feel the story is bigger than chasing leads.
I share this now to inspire you that you CAN achieve big things no matte how small you feel you are.
Remember the famous African proverb
“If you think you are too small to make a difference,
you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito.”
