If you dont know by now then you will know today that alongside promoting and campaigning for African cotton we are soo in love with traditional handwoven cloth. So you can imagine our joy when we came across this Danish find with an African twist.
Trine Lindegaard was born in Odense, Denmark but studied industrial pattern cutting and manufacturing at the Istituto Carlo Secoli in Milan. She also studied at Middlesex Uni in London finalising with an MA in menswear at Royal College of Art in 2013. Her clothes are noted as “colourful with a light-hearted approach to menswear” and is known to be bold with textile technigues and innovation.
What excites us at AFG is that for her SS13 collection she takes on West Africa as inspiration. This wearable collection infuses vibrant and refreshing colours in a sporty ilk. Vivid hues alongside the traditional geometric prints of the unique West African fabric Kente fabric where bold colours are layered over a darker palette. This gives the garments a modern yet contemporary graphic look which raises awareness of the ancient craft. It promotes the traditional craft of the collections African heritage which is nearly an extinct fabric and it is their hope to thus preserve this tradition as well as the craft of African communities who produce this fantastic textile.
There are some great menswear collections out now inspired and or made in Africa, with Lawrence Airlines and Buki Akib making an impact of late, though Trine is not an Africa designer props must be given to this collection as this is one of them. Seriously, a great collection. Loving the shorts and top ensembles especially the first colourway below. Which is your favourite?
