A Flash of African Brands Light up the Catwalk at NYFW

This season fashion week in New York has been one of glamour , freshness and newness but what we are loving is the influx of African made, inspired, influenced design as much as the African designers taking to the catwalk. See an African fashion snapshot of what was displayed over New York Fashion Week.

  • NYFW SS13 | Mimi Plange

Ghanaian designer Mimi Plange’s SS13 collection entitled “Tea With Mother” was inspired by the “refined elegance of aspirational adult-style and the fragile beauty of modern porcelain art”. It sure is feminine, soft, gentle and extreme empowers womanhood.

  • NYFW SS13 | Edun
One of our favourite brands associated with Africa is EDUN founded by Ali Hewson & Bono in 2005. Their aim has always been to focus on bringing positive change through its trading relationship with Africa.

There has been a lot of debate about how much EDUN is made in Africa but they are aiming to produce 40% of its seasonal fashion collection in Africa by 2013 by building long term, sustainable opportunities through supporting manufacturers, infrastructure and community building initiatives, and they do currently working in Kenya, Morocco, Madagascar, Uganda and Tunisia.

Either way we love this new collection very relaxed, yet raw with a slight Diesel design feel to it. Good on you Sharon Wachaub!

NYFW SS13 | Suno

Max Osterweis and team of New York based label SUNO is a New York never fail to deliver a feminine and delicate and must have collection. This SS13 range is so delicate and fresh yet still has elements of Africa infiltrated through its moder khanga print fabrics and soft flower prints.

Max and the brand is known for its use of vintage Kenyan textiles that Osterweis had been collecting for years, they created their first small collection, produced predominantly in Kenya and  business has now evolved to include production in Kenya, India, Peru and its home base of New York. It proves that luxury can and IS coming out of the often considered ‘Dark Continent’.

NYFW SS13 | Arise Magazine ‘African Icons’

All eyes on this must attend show. Arise Magazine are now notorious for creating a new African aesthetic and for producing high end shows and this seasons edition at NYFW also never failed. Great job Arise!
