The Neighbourgoods Market Where Shopping Local is Trendy – RETAIL

Where local cuisine teams up with local trendy designers

Founded by Justin Rhodes and Cameron Munro with an aim of reviving and reinventing the public market as a civic institution, the Neighbourgoods Market is proving to be a one-stop shop for fresh organic food, delicate treats, mouth watering cuisines and fun locally designed fashionable clothing stalls.

The market takes place every Saturday in two cities one in Woodstock Cape town at an old Biscuit Mill from 9am to 2pm, and the other in the inner-city in Braamfontein down town Johannesburg from 9am to 3pm. The market is housed in a concrete building in Juta Street. It is surrounded by local businesses, restaurants, boutiques, pop-up shops, student accommodations, colleges, universities, popular chill out spots and is just a few blocks away from the Ithuba art gallery.

The market in Braamfontein seems to transform into a different city on Saturdays. As the city noises, rush hour traffic and hooting taxis stops and the crowded streets of school goers, workers and  college students all disappears and seem almost non-existent.

Right opposite the neigbourgoods market is a beautiful vintage looking building that makes you feel as if you are back in the 1920s. The buildings name is Kitcheners Carvery Bar and it offers drinks as well houses Nthabiseng Motau who is a designer that makes her own clothing and jewellery as well as sells the cutest vintage pieces from bags, belts, shoes and clothes. Her collections include the black line and the sweetblackberry jewellery collection. (For more information: 0761477909)

But the main feel of the place is as you enter the Neighbourgoods Market, there is a strong trendy sort of vibrant young vibe with crowds of people walking around, just chilling and hanging out with friends and family. You will find people sitting around and eating from wooden benches and tables, surrounded by the many stalls of well prepared meals, fresh organic foods, cocktails and plenty to drink. It is an amazing atmosphere.

As you walk up to the rooftop you see my favourite part of the market, the clothing stalls which are just filled with the cutest locally produced items.
