My Rockstars is an exhibition by London-based artist Hassan Hajjaj. Hassan was inspired by his childhood in Morocco specifically Marrakech where his research began and he lives part of the year. Hassan has been known to take pictures of your day to day average people such as musicians through to male belly dancers all to represent his everyday rockstars. The clothes they are dressed in are his own designs and then he photographed them in front of framed fabric patterns that he created himself.
My Rockstars: Volume 1 is a series of studio portraits that Hajjaj has been working on since 1998 and exhibited for the first time at The Third Line gallery in Dubai last month. Hajjaj has been exhibiting his work throughout Europe as well as Africa through to the Middle East. He has a background in various areas in Fashion and has even learnt film prodiction but has been taking pictures since 1989 when he bought a camera from a friend. Photographers like Samuel Fosso and Seydou Keita have been involved in Rockstars previously but it is the work of Malick Sidibe’s of Malian nightlife made a big impact on the work,
“I’m trying to create something which has as much of my identity as possible … something that is fresh in Europe and Africa … it’s like when you see the jars and the sweets in the shop as a child.”
The frame around this portrait is extremely cool, creative and fun. You will find shelves crammed with 7 Up and Coca-Cola cans, which can represent and even symbolize the growing import market. Its all very 70s and the way he has frame the images as he says traps the eyes, to “bring the viewers to your work”. He has been introduced as “the guy with the Coca-Cola frame” but we recognise that its all about the power of branding and these brands give his work an international identity.
There are plans for a London installment of his Rockstars for next year and we cant wait to see it.
