The way to a fashionista’s heart is through designer label after all there is nothing more soothing to a woman’s heart than retail therapy; it is even more fun when you do not have to shed a single cent to quench that fashion thirst. To warm the spirit of all fashion lovers, Skip together with Destiny magazine have introduced a new to the local scene concept called “Swap to Shop”. This latest craze which is sweeping the world by storm was launched early this month in Johannesburg. it is an ethical, eco-fabulous clothing exchange that skip is proud to be introducing to South African fashion lovers. Discerning fashionistas who appreciate quality clothing will be able to swap gorgeous but unwanted outfits for just the ones they like while being wallet and environmentally-friendly.
The first of the four parts events was held at the Regent Hotel in Johannesburg last Saturday. Hosted by fashion icon Noni Gasa and fashion designer Nkhensani Nkosi of Stoned Cherrie clothing label, this event kicked off in style with champagne and canapés followed by entertaining fashion talk, while this is taking place, a pop-up fashion exchange is set up for guests to enjoy, then the real swapping begins. Skip uses “swing tags” as the currency for purchasing at the exchange. You receive one swing per graded clothing and accessory item checked in as guests arrive and these are in due course redeemed for an equivalent item. Each participant is allowed to bring in three items. With stylists and clothes alteration booths on hand for advice or a quick nip and tuck, there’s nothing to stop you from making a fabulous impression in your new rags. Participants are thus discerningly invited and they get to enjoy some girl-time not only oohing and aahing over the best fashion but also learning up-to-date styling tips at the same time. Skip has identified a growing body of upmarket women in South Africa who love to indulge in the latest fashion trends and are constantly expanding their wardrobe, yet who hate to simply discard valuable outfits they no longer wear.
Though the clothes swapping trend originated in the United States in the nineties, Australian caught on in 2004 and South Africa has joined this amazing gravy train. Online clothes swapping have also become popular, with websites offering an environmentally friendly and frugal alternative to shopping. Skip is proud to be bringing the fashion Exchange evening trend to South Africa. “The Skip Fashion Exchanges are a way of giving nearly-new clothing a second chance. It is an opportunity for ladies to come together and update their glamorous wardrobes whilst reducing fashion waste. We believe there is no better way to shop as it benefits the consumer and the planet 100%- save money, save the earth and have a lot of fun doing it” said Jaclyn Duffied, Skip Marketing Assistant.
If you have missed the first part of this fabulous event, worry not for you still have a chance to give your wardrobe that instant make-over at the next three events which will take place in Pretoria on the 29th September and 20 October and back in Johannesburg again on the 6th October.
