V&A FRIDAY LATE takes up residency at WANDERLUST, Paris

Afropolitans V&A paris

Last year we went to a packed event at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum called Afropolitans. We are excited to hear that it will happen this year in Paris! It was a well attended, well thought out and structured event with film, workshops, fashion shows and discussions and was definitely worth going to.

This July, WANDERLUST, the new multi-disciplinary space set in the Docks-Cité de la Mode et du Design is proud to present a monthly collaborative partnership with London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. On the last Friday of every month, the V&A will present Friday Late Paris.

Launching on Friday 29 June and following its success in London in 2011, the V&A will present Afropolitans, an evening exploring African photography, fashion, and personal style. This event looks back to the image-makers who captured the excitement, optimism, and post-independence freedom of the 1960s and 1970s, and forward to the young global tastemakers who are creating a new urban and cosmopolitan African aesthetic.

Afropolitans will be part of the ongoing SUR-MESURE programme occuring every Friday at WANDERLUST. From 6pm till 10pm, a specific theme will be focused on with a reading, performances, cinema showings and installations, interactive activities and much more. SUR-MESURE is held in collaboration with an eclectic range of partners including: the Musée Galliera, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the IFM and the INA.

Starting at 6pm, Afropolitans will offer a variety of activities to choose from including: a conversation between new design talent Adrien Sauvage (of menswear label A. Sauvage) and Afropolitans curator Orla Houston-Jibo; a Malick Sidibé-esque West African portrait photography studio with Sal Idriss, where visitors can have their portraits taken; an interactive installation by emerging label Laurence Airline; a textile screen printing workshop with Emamoke Ukeleghe using Vlisco’s famous Dutch wax fabrics; and screenings of documentary films Dolce Vita Africana and Sunday in Brazzaville.

Throughout the evening from 6pm until 6am, there will be DJ SETS from SECOUSSE SOUND SYSTEM: DJ TRON (Paris), DJ SERPENT NOIR (Ivory coast), DJ MO LAUDI (South Africa) and IZE TEXEIRA (Cabo verde) playing the latest and greatest tropical bass sounds including kuduro, souks, Soweto funk, and shangaan electro.

The V&A’s Friday Late Paris continues at WANDERLUST on Friday 27 July with The London Look. Notes to Editors: All events are free and places designated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis,

unless stipulated otherwise. Filming and photography will be taking place at this event.
