Ghana introduces ‘Della’ – Fashion with a Conscience

mage Della AW12

One out of every three people in Ghana lives below the poverty line.

Los Angeles based designer Tina Tangalakis touched down in Ghana unaware of the changes that would occur. As a volunteer and teacher at the Happy Kids Orphanage, Tina met local seamstress Beatrice Agabe. The two quickly bonded over their shared love of design and passion to improve the lives of others. It was there, in the vibrant village of Hohoe, among the scraps of fabric, rough pencil designs and long conversations between two unlikely friends, that Della was born.

Della is a social enterprise, labor of love and fashion accessory line.  They have partnered with a dedicated team of women in Ghana, West Africa, to produce high quality, stylish products. a fashion company that aims to help Ghanaian women achieve financial independence while creating versatile, playful, and totally gorgeous handbags. In addition to providing the women with jobs, Della also educates them in entrepreneurship and ways to escape poverty. Tina’s intention behind Della is to be a socially responsible fashion line that provide jobs and education to the community, while bringing awareness of Hohoe’s struggle to the Western World.

The Classic Hobo, is functional and beautiful, constructed from local textiles in Ghana’s with each purse handmade by economically vulnerable women who work under Beatrice’s mentorship. The sale of every bag has a positive effect on the people of Hohoe.  These vibrant hobo bags are the foundation of economic independece to its team of Ghanaian women and with summer here Della’s ‘Tribal Sunset Hobo Bag’ is ready to hit the beaches with you as you soak up the sunshine.
