There are a lot of value coming from doing these type of shows especially for South African Fashion as African Fashion International (AFI) has partnered with SA Tourism to develop South Africa’s tourist industry through the medium of fashion and through these shows. AFI have identified ‘Fashion Tourism’ as one of four key pillars of Cape Town Fashion Week, as the event encourages more and more tourists to embark on a trip to SA and so brings in money and more to the country helping to build it up.

WOW! Cape Town is hotting up this year! Ladies check out the gorgeous male body in the front. Anyway I digress :)

On top of this, African Fashion International have also begun their inaugural AFI/iFashion Start UP! Competition offering one 2nd or 3rd year fashion design student everything they would need to start a successful fashion brand a complete start-up fashion business package.

They visited various fashion schools such as Cape Peninsula University of Technology fashion design and Cape Town College of Fashion Design and gave students information of how to get involved, and possibly to the show at Cape Town Fashion Week. Tshepo de Villiers from Cape Town Fashion Council explained how CTFC is there to assist growing the fashion industry by speaking of the benefits of their membership, and also how the students can utilise their design centre.

They spoke of their Fastrack programme which also could boost the students career and instructed them to design and create a wearable garment inspired by the art of embroidery (machine or hand embroidered) and must incorporate the latest trends in colour, design and technique along with a mood board and a 200 word piece about the garment.

Prizes included

  • Exposure and publicity through the IFashion portal
  • R 10 000 cash prize

  • A large hamper from Brother Brand valued at R2 000

It is interesting the amount of fashion competitions there are happening generally but even more promising to see the ones coming from Africa. Africa Fashion Guide will be presenting our first fashion competition in 2012 so get researching people!
